Why Tomorrow Never Comes

Seyi Tosin, the author of Think Fast Act Fast & How to start, describes the best practices of time management.

Important questions

How many times in the last week have you caught yourself saying, “It’s just a busy time in my life right now”?

Once? Twice? Six times?

We’ve all been there, using the “busy” excuse to justify delaying our goals and dreams.

But here’s the thing: busyness is not a temporary state; it’s a permanent resident in our lives.

Think about it:

Do you genuinely believe you’ll be less busy in the future?

The answer is almost always “no.”

Even if you convince yourself that things will slow down, life has a way of surprising us. New priorities emerge, unexpected challenges arise, and our schedules adapt to accommodate them.

I’m not sharing this to induce anxiety or encourage you to prepare for the worst.

Instead, I want to emphasize the importance of developing mental resilience to manage competing priorities and make progress on what truly matters.

The Time Myth

We often tell ourselves that we’ll start working on our goals “tomorrow” when we’re less busy.

But this mythical “tomorrow” never arrives.

As Steven Pressfield aptly puts it:

We don’t tell ourselves, ‘I’m never going to write my symphony.’

Instead, we say, ‘I am going to write my symphony; I’m just going to start tomorrow.’

This mindset is a trap.

By perpetually delaying our goals, we risk losing valuable time and momentum.

Breaking Free from the Busy Excuse

So, what can you do instead?

1. Acknowledge your busyness: Recognize that busyness is a permanent part of your life. Rather than fighting it, learn to work with it.

2. Prioritize your goals: Identify what truly matters to you and allocate time for those goals. Be intentional about how you spend your time.

3. Start small: Don’t wait for the perfect moment or until you have a large block of time. Begin working on your goals in small, manageable increments.

4. Seek support: Share your goals with a trusted friend or mentor and ask them to hold you accountable. This can provide an added motivation to stay on track.

5. Celebrate progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. This will help you stay motivated and encouraged.
